3 Wedding Photography Styles With Descriptions for Couples To Understand

3 Wedding Photography Styles With Descriptions for Couples To Understand

There are basically three major wedding photography styles that are common within the wedding industry. However, in today's world, it's easy for couples to get confused because sometimes terminology is often used interchangeably and (not intentionally) sometimes wedding professionals forget that couples don't always know those terms. As a couple you're probably thinking that all wedding photographY is the same in terms of style, but the truth is that there are different wedding photography styles. There are also different elements that can differentiate the styles I'm discussing which is where the terms "light&airy", "dark&moody", "double-exposure", and more come into play.

After a few years of shooting weddings and being a part of a couples journey to becoming officially married, one of the most common statements made by couples is, "I get overwhelmed looking at these different photographers and I don't know the difference between a documentary-style photographer and a fine-art wedding photographer..." Does that sound familiar?

For couples, choosing a wedding photographer that shoots in a style fit for that couple (what the couple likes) can be very confusing--at the end of the day it's important for couples to at the very least have some basic understanding of the different types of wedding photography styles that are out there to reduce this confusion and avoid as much overwhelm as possible.

hello there so I'm here today with the

00:07

question of the day and that is your

00:12

couple planning your wedding you just

00:15

got engaged and the first thing what one

00:17

of the first thing that you're probably

00:18

doing is you're looking at different

00:20

wedding photographers you might even be

00:23

looking at different wedding

00:25

videographers which you should be and so

00:27

you're searching the web maybe your

00:31

friend is telling you about different

00:33

you know oh I went to this person or

00:36

this company whatever right and you're

00:38

online you're getting all these amazing

00:40

references and referrals but you're like

00:43

I don't understand the different types

00:46

of wedding photography styles this is

00:50

very common so don't panic so I am here

00:54

today to give you a quick description

00:58

and outline of three common wedding

01:03

photography styles now let me just say

01:05

are there more than three absolutely but

01:09

I wanted to focus on the ones that I one

01:13

commonly here that I know and I was also

01:17

able to give you guys some descriptions

01:21

and some prime examples of photographers

01:25

that fall within these different

01:28

categories so as you know I'm always

01:31

sharing my live videos so that is the

01:33

intro if this is your first time tuning

01:36

in this is unashamed imaging live where

01:39

I go over different things majority I

01:43

have to honestly say all of my content

01:45

uses real weddings

01:47

majority of them are mine so I have been

01:51

doing this for said last year and I

01:56

really enjoy it because I get questions

01:58

all the time from couples whether it's a

02:01

bride a couple as a whole etc and I'm

02:04

able to help them along the way because

02:07

who better to get advice from then

02:09

someone who actually does

02:12

the work right so let's get started so

02:17

there are three common wedding

02:21

photography styles so you have fine art

02:24

you have like documentary photo

02:27

journalistic and then you have lifestyle

02:31

so those are the three that I'm going to

02:33

be focusing on so basically in today's

02:38

world it's easy for professionals to

02:41

kind of talk about themselves because

02:43

that's what we do you want to connect

02:44

with you but we also talk about our art

02:46

and sometimes we can't I would have to

02:49

say that we're guilty of just saying oh

02:51

I'm a fine art wedding photographer or

02:54

I'm a documentary photographer and then

02:56

you're like that's nice what does that

02:57

mean so this live video is just going to

03:02

break that down real quick for you guys

03:04

like I said that's gonna be a quick one

03:06

today for these different types of

03:09

wedding photography my style so I hear a

03:13

lot of couples say things like oh my

03:15

gosh I'm looking around and all these

03:17

photographers are great but like I say I

03:20

don't know what she falls under or he or

03:22

she falls under or their company falls

03:25

under so let's start with the first one

03:29

that I have here which is by one of my

03:32

friends that I enjoyed lovely love

03:34

loving looking at her work and that's

03:37

joy Michelle photography and she is

03:40

without a doubt 100% fine art whatever

03:43

your whole style is fine art this is her

03:45

artwork right here and if you click the

03:48

link in the post or I'll add it to as a

03:54

comment you will be able to check out

03:57

her work so I'm just gonna end us in a

04:01

comment check out the blog posts and you

04:03

can get some more information outside of

04:06

the live video so join Michelle is 100

04:09

percent a great example of fine art

04:12

wedding photography this is the kind of

04:14

work that you would find in lengthen not

04:16

or Martha Stewart Weddings like any type

04:19

of another where's the twenty-seventh

04:24

magazine that you'd pick up

04:26

in a sore that is like real real fine

04:29

are real high-end that's the kind of

04:32

work that she does so the best

04:35

description for this type of photography

04:37

is definitely penny and capturing

04:41

details so you'll see a lot of close-ups

04:42

of like florals bridal accessories

04:45

bouquets very I mean like look at

04:48

whatever shots really you can see it's a

04:49

lot of focus are here on okay

04:52

very intimate very emotional driven and

04:56

in some cases it can also be dramatic

04:59

now be sure that you don't confuse

05:02

dramatic with like I don't know like

05:05

adventurous like Marvel Studios it's in

05:08

any more type of like drama stuff like

05:10

that that's not it dramatic would be

05:13

more of you can like you'll see the

05:16

details and the images but you'll also

05:18

feel the different types of energy

05:24

between a couple like you know this

05:26

couple it's not like he's just sitting

05:28

there in your life whatever you can feel

05:30

they're in the moment so you get that

05:32

like intense emotion is probably the

05:35

best to simplify it and then I want to

05:38

share here some examples of details that

05:40

are captured in like fine art wedding

05:42

part so you'll see a lot of close-up

05:44

shots like they said so every little

05:47

detail that the bride is as a part of

05:49

her day I guarantee you is going to be

05:51

shot in this type of photography and

05:54

that is why you know somebody may feel

05:58

differently but that is why I believe

05:59

that this is the type of work hate

06:00

Jennifer businesses have work that

06:03

you'll find in magazines like the night

06:05

market because they love showing details

06:08

so let's go to the next one which is

06:12

lifestyle photography and I'm featuring

06:16

one of my good friends L of captured by

06:19

L and she's definitely like we have just

06:22

talked about this so I'm just tell you

06:24

guys are not just random people right so

06:27

she definitely falls under lights off

06:29

photography when you read the

06:31

description and we were talking to each

06:33

other reliable like yes that's it so

06:37

this is like a mixture

06:39

and she calls it like a hybrid mixture

06:42

of documentary and find out which I can

06:44

agree with as well so you'll finds it

06:47

being definitely a mixture of

06:50

photojournalism and traditional so how

06:54

do you get an understanding of this they

06:56

cope like what I just showed you which

06:58

was fine art but a little bit more

07:00

candid and natural and a genuine feel

07:05

moment where for example now I'm sure L

07:08

wouldn't do this during the ceremony

07:09

because that's just a moment that we

07:12

we've rarely interjections unless

07:14

someone is like standing directly in

07:15

front of us that is being inappropriate

07:18

but in the event of like a portrait

07:21

session or bribe you know riding through

07:24

a couple portrait session however you

07:26

like to call it this is where we

07:29

probably would interject so that you had

07:31

you still have that natural candid

07:33

moment but she would interject which she

07:36

felt led to to have her creative input

07:39

so the cool thing about this this kind

07:42

of photography is that anyone I was

07:44

writing this I was like yes this is

07:46

really cool because you get that mixture

07:49

you get those documentary style moments

07:51

you get those fine art details but then

07:54

you also get the moment where it's like

07:56

you you almost have you almost go look

07:59

at the work and say okay assistant

08:01

natural moment was this pose so if

08:04

you're kind of feeling that way I

08:05

guarantee you it's more of lifestyle

08:07

photography and I was sharing as well

08:12

that I can definitely relate to this

08:13

because I do this style as well even

08:17

though I'm leaning more towards fine art

08:20

I still incorporate this within parts of

08:23

my day

08:24

so definitely love I love all three of

08:27

these that I'm talking about cuz they

08:28

all serves like a great purpose and so I

08:31

gave some examples here of life what it

08:34

means like interject it within a pose

08:36

moment so this is my work here and of

08:41

course I placed like for instance the

08:44

price let's look at this little I place

08:45

them on the stairwell I told them you

08:48

know this person's that beyond but I

08:51

love live with those she said she

08:52

completely agreed

08:53

the description absolutely that's good

08:56

see guys so I'm leading you in the right

08:57

way so with this photo obviously I told

09:01

them to get on the stairwell and I lined

09:03

them up because as a photographer you

09:06

know I know what I wanted to look and I

09:08

don't want to get this look however you

09:11

know outside of that there's going to be

09:13

kin in actual moments and I find those

09:15

moments to be you know the best so of

09:18

course I'm telling them I'm talking to

09:20

them you know in the moment I'm not

09:22

going sick so exactly what I'm saying

09:23

and it's not because I have this big

09:25

secret because every wedding is

09:26

different so I buy differently with how

09:29

I need to communicate but that is an

09:31

example of you know that's an example of

09:35

having a moment where your interjecting

09:36

but you're still linked still allowing

09:38

the natural and candid moment to

09:40

transpire so this one the next the last

09:44

one that I'm going to talk about is

09:45

documentary and photojournalistic first

09:48

of all let me just say I love this guy's

09:50

work okay I worked with him before at

09:52

their camara of 33 in the photography

09:56

his work is so good now he definitely he

10:01

would definitely be dark and moody

10:02

compared to like my style or join join

10:05

me tell or else final back to show you

10:08

guys but in his work is so good like

10:11

seriously it when I worked with him that

10:13

day I was just like flat-out like I

10:15

loved his approach I love how there was

10:18

moments where I was not like myself I

10:21

wouldn't do that because it doesn't go

10:23

with like how I approach but when I saw

10:26

what he produced in the end I was just

10:28

like that is phenomenal so I love that

10:32

he has like this documentary or photo

10:34

journalistic touch to his work and so

10:38

what you'll find like with that type of

10:40

photography is it is definitely more

10:44

natural and candid they're not going to

10:48

be that much posing but if there is it

10:52

would be more so like to correct

10:54

something because it doesn't look right

10:56

which any of any of these styles would

10:59

definitely do but I wanted to make sure

11:02

that it's understood that this type

11:06

Photography is to be you know value just

11:10

as much as excuse me as fine art or

11:14

lifestyle photography sorry guys I have

11:16

to reload this I don't know why it just

11:19

glitched up isola there we go

11:23

okay so I just thought that sounds like

11:26

that's weird

11:28

so I also wanted to make sure that you

11:33

guys understood like even though this

11:37

may be more of like a laid-back in

11:41

that's all like opinion as well don't

11:46

confuse it with a lazy photographer like

11:49

this type of photography is the type of

11:52

photography that you like see or line

11:54

and you're like wow like I wanted to be

11:58

there or I wish I was there like and his

12:01

work is so good I think that too just

12:03

joined us

12:04

so hey actor I think that's you um his

12:07

work is like super good like like I said

12:11

I worked with him before and I was just

12:13

like me it made me actually the weddings

12:15

home that I put out for Shalika and

12:18

Kevin he actually made me be more

12:21

creative with their wedding film because

12:23

they hired the both of us which is which

12:26

was great and we obviously have two

12:28

different styles if you look at like his

12:30

work and fine but he actually made me

12:32

push my creativity for that wedding that

12:35

we shot together so this is why I chose

12:38

these three type of these three types of

12:41

wedding photography to highlight in the

12:45

blog post because I see a lot of it like

12:48

I see a lot of posts and I see couples

12:50

you know talked a lot about you know

12:53

they just they're just confused with the

12:55

different types of wedding photography

12:57

cells that are out there and so I was

12:59

like you know what I'm gonna highlight

13:00

three of the best wedding photography

13:04

style that I like that I've seen and I

13:07

had to pick people that I'm better

13:09

absolutely killing it in their

13:11

particular style so if you want to check

13:14

out any of the people that I mentioned

13:16

in this blog you can go to the link that

13:18

put it in the comments and you'll be

13:20

linked all three of them to their

13:23

website so you'll definitely be able to

13:25

see they work there

13:28

oh you're welcome Hector like I met what

13:32

I say it so he said he just ladies

13:36

scrolling hints on your site but

13:39

seriously like I actually can say I have

13:44

an element of like all three and I said

13:46

I'm leaning more now towards more fine

13:48

art but all three I definitely have done

13:52

and I know like for documentary like I

13:55

definitely shoot perceptions like a

13:58

documentary and the reason why is like

14:00

I'm not about to go I'm not about to

14:02

like stop people dancing during the

14:04

reception think I'll turn this way so I

14:06

can get you like on camera in the right

14:08

way like no that's a--that's a

14:10

difference also between a professional

14:11

but I felt like that was a really good

14:14

example of what documentary style

14:16

photography looks like during a

14:18

reception which I excuse me stated in

14:22

the blog post so I hope this right L

14:26

okay see I still look L agree that his

14:28

work because he tell you look first of

14:29

all Golding is about peace don't even

14:31

look at work yet like I want you to but

14:34

his about page super chill

14:37

like I love how you feel like you you

14:39

know him just by looking at his about

14:42

page which is like a witty way because

14:44

he just being himself in like as someone

14:48

who worked with him looking at is about

14:49

page it's like equivalent so I'm going

14:53

to stop there I also added some

14:56

different things that you like as far as

14:59

like how far in advance you should you

15:00

book your wedding photographer how to

15:02

implement an unplugged wedding in 2018

15:05

wedding trends in the same piece so

15:09

definitely go check it out

15:10

I am hopping off but if you're catching

15:12

to replay this was basically the

15:14

question of the day of how do I know

15:16

what style what type of style of my

15:20

wedding photographer is if you have any

15:22

questions drop them in a comment below

15:23

and I'll see you guys next time

15:26

fine
